Drinker of the Wind

Drinker of the Wind
A Poem by Carol Huechan

From the spirit of the Bedouin,
From the never-ending sands,
From the south wind of the desert,
From the ancient, tribal lands,
Comes a horse of noble breeding,
One of gentleness and fire,
One of stamina and courage
To fulfil a heart’s desire.

Purpose bred, supreme in battle,
Yet with beauty unsurpassed.
Proudly elegant aesthetics
In a body built to last.
Ever striving and enduring,
A survivor, sure and thrift,
Fleet of foot and proud of carriage,
Brave and willing, strong and swift.

He’s been chosen by the leaders
Of the nations of the world
He’s excelled in every action;
Every banner he’s unfurled.
Sometimes misaligned and doubted,
Often worshipped from afar.
He’s intelligence unrivalled;
He’s the presence of a star.

He’s a lion hearted comrade,
Who will dance on angel’s wings.
He’s a childhood dream fulfilling.
He’s a gift from Kings to Kings.
He’s the horse of all the horses;
He’s the breed of all the breeds,
Renown throughout the universe
For legendary deeds.

Do not try to steal his spirit.
Do not try to quell his pride.
Learn to understand his thinking.
Do not force but firmly guide.
He will revel in each challenge
And succeed his whole life through.
And you will be rewarded
With a partner tried and true.
